Salal is a leathery leaf
evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Northwest. It can grow from
5” to 6” on the edge of open bluffs to several feet in length in
more shaded, cool damp terrain. Salal is also food for a variety
of animals such as elk, deer and black bear. Salal berries were
gathered as food which were eaten by the natives of the Pacific
coast. Salal is harvested for several months of the year, and is
used in floral arrangements.
